Food & Mood: Chocolate

Food & Mood: Chocolate

Did you know the earliest signs of chocolate being used for food date back to 450 BC Mesoamerica. The Aztecs believed that cacao seeds were a gift of the God of wisdom… so obviously you’re very wise if you like chocolate!

Chocolate is all around us, marketing pushes the fact that eating chocolate can make you happy, but this is true for a balanced diet as well.

Food and Mood go hand in hand. While it’s tempting to reach for the sweet treats when you’re feeling down, eating more nourishing foods can have a far better effect.

If you’re an emotional eater chocolate is probably one of your go tos, next time you’re feeling low try and distract yourself, grab a glass of water and do something for yourself – read a book, go for a walk, play your favourite game, or be creative.

This is not to say you shouldn’t have chocolate! We should have a a little bit of something that we enjoy, it’s called balance! Restricting can lead to the opposite problem of binging. Again, it’s all about moderation.

The better your food choices, the better you’ll feel and your mental wellbeing will thank you for it.

So stay hydrated and maybe try some dark chocolate, the stronger tastes means you may want to consume less and it has been said dark chocolate (70%+) contains antioxidants … worth giving it a try, in moderation, if you ask me!
